Journalism & Citizenship continues its commitment to serving journalists in the Arab world and the Mediterranean region
On 5 December 2025, Journalism & Citizenship launched the second phase of its Sahafa Med program in Amman, Jordan. This program extends the work begun in 2021 to support journalists in the Arab world and the Mediterranean region for another four years.
Thanks to the support of the European Union, and in a promising partnership with the Arab Regional Investigative Journalism Network (ARIJ), Sahafa Med 2 aims to develop the formidable exchange network we have been able to create between journalists in the Arab world and the media development organisations that support them.
With the support and expertise of its network of correspondents in Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen, Journalism & Citizenship has been able to bring together several hundred journalists at the Mediterranean Journalism Conferences, whether in Tunis, Marseille, Tours or Brussels, not to mention the meetings on the situation of journalists in Gaza and Lebanon organised in Paris, in partnership with the Arab World Institute.
Ces rencontres ont permis de faire vivre et nourrir les débats sur les enjeux du journalisme dans la région et de discuter des enjeux et des défis auxquels sont confrontés les médias et les journalistes.
Building on this experience, Sahafa Med 2 invites communities of journalists and news producers in the Arab world to work on five major themes to improve their impact in serving citizens:
1/ Media and information literacy,
2/ Gender issues
3/ Editorial coverage of migration
4/ Artificial intelligence
5/ Climate change and environmental issues.
New Sahafa Med meetings will also be organised several times a year in the Maghreb and the Middle East, as well as in Paris each year, in partnership with the Arab World Institute.
All these meetings will feed into the fourth edition of the Mediterranean Agora for Journalism, to be held in Marseille from 4 to 7 October 2027, ahead of a fifth edition in October 2029.
