Around sixty journalists from across the Arab world gathered on 9 and 10 February 2026 in Rabat, Morocco, for a “Sahafa Med” meeting dedicated to strengthening media coverage of environmental and climate issues. The event was organized in partnership with the Moroccan Ministry of Culture, Communication and Youth, with the support of the European Union.
In Rabat, Tunisian journalist Mabrouka Khedir, founder of the media outlet “Cosmos,” and Iraqi journalist Khaled Suleiman presented an overview of the current state of environmental news coverage in the Arab world. During the meeting, several initiatives aimed at strengthening and expanding the presence of climate and environmental topics in Arab media were introduced. Discussions also explored ways to enhance cooperation and collaboration between journalists and scientists.
For his part, Stefano Dotto, representative of the EU’s Directorate-General for the Middle East and North Africa (DGMENA), reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to supporting independent media and highlighted the vital role played by civil society and journalists in raising awareness and promoting action on environmental challenges.
This meeting marks also the official launch of the “Sahafa Med” working group, bringing together journalists from across the region who specialize in environmental issues. The group will meet regularly to foster exchanges and collaboration among journalists and media outlets in this field.
