Support to journalists in Syria and Turkey after the massive February 6 earthquake

Journalism & Citizenship (J&C) voices its support to the journalists affected by the February 6 earthquake in Turkey and Syria. J&C send its condolences to the families and relatives of journalists who lost their lives in this tragedy.

According to media reports, at least five Syrian journalists and 17 Turkish journalists have been killed by the massive February 6 earthquake to this day. Syrian journalist Yaman al-Khateeb, winner of the 27th Bayeux Calvados-Normandy War Reporter Award 2020, died in Antakya, Turkey, with 12 members of his family. Syrian journalists Tareq Kashtan and Ayman al-Said also died in Antakya, and Ammar al-Aswad and Ghayath Abu Ahmad both lost their lives in northern Syria.

This is just the latest tragedy for Syrian journalists. Syria is one of the most dangerous countries for journalists in the world. Between March 2011 and May 2022, the Syrian Network for Human Rights documented the murder of 711 journalists and media workers.

J&C also stand behind all Syrian and Turkish journalists trying to cover the situation and inform the population.
