Launch of the Sahafa Med 2 programme 2025/2029

Press release

Journalism & Citizenship continues its commitment to serving journalists in the arab world and the Mediterranean

On 5 December 2025, Journalism & Citizenship launched the second phase of its Sahafa Med programme in Amman, Jordan. The programme extends the work begun in 2021 to support journalists in the Aarab world and the Mediterranean for another four years.

Thanks to the support of the European Union and a promising partnership with the Arab Regional Investigative Journalism (ARIJ) organisation, Sahafa Med 2 aims to develop the formidable network of exchanges we have been able to create between journalists in the Arab world and the media development organisations that support them.
With the support and expertise of its network of correspondents in Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia and Yemen, Journalisme & Citoyenneté has been able to bring together several hundred journalists at the Mediterranean Journalism Conferences, whether in Tunis, Marseille, Tours or Brussels, not to mention the meetings on the situation of journalists in Gaza and Lebanon in Paris, in partnership with the Arab World Institute.

These meetings provided an opportunity to stimulate and fuel debate on the challenges facing journalism in the region and to discuss the issues and challenges confronting the media and journalists.
Building on these achievements, Sahafa Med 2 invites communities of journalists and news producers in the Arab world to work on five major themes to improve their impact in serving citizens:
1/ Media and information literacy,
2/ Gender issues
3/ Editorial coverage of migration
4/ Artificial intelligence
5/ Climate change and environmental issues.

New Sahafa Med meetings will also be organised several times a year in the Maghreb and the Middle East, as well as in Paris each year, in partnership with the Arab World Institute.
All these meetings will feed into the fourth edition of the Mediterranean Journalism Conference, to be held in Marseille from 4 to 7 October 2027, ahead of a fifth edition in October 2029.

Thanks to the support of the European Union and its partnership with the pan-Arab organisation ARIJ, Journalism & Citizenship is consolidating its presence in the southern Mediterranean and its ambition to foster dialogue between journalists from the southern and northern Mediterranean in order to provide reliable, high-quality information for citizens.
